People, Planet, Leadership: Driving Change for a Healthier Future

Human health requires a healthy planet

As planetary boundaries are pushed and the climate crisis deepens, the call for bold, informed leadership in healthcare has never been more urgent. This TEDx-style session introduces BMJ Leader’s new Topic Collection on Planetary Health Leadership, a call to action—that challenges leaders across health systems to step up, speak out, and act for the future of both people and planet.

Join our topic collection’s editorial leadership as we explore shaping the global dialogue on sustainable healthcare leadership.

After the talks, all three speakers will join a conversation on practical strategies, leadership challenges, and the role of scholarship and storytelling in driving change. Audience questions will be taken live.

Why Leadership Is the Missing Link

With over 15 years of clinical experience in the NHS and recent fellowships spanning NHS England, the BMJ, and BMJ Leader, Sam brings a frontline and editorial perspective to planetary health. In this talk, she explores how leadership across healthcare systems can directly influence sustainability outcomes—from embedding climate-conscious thinking in clinical practice to tackling the carbon footprint of clinical trials. Drawing on her current work at the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition and her experience curating content focused on health and climate, Sam makes the case for why leadership isn’t just part of the solution—it’s where the shift must begin.
